Types of Construction Equipment and Their Uses

Construction equipment range from the very heavy equipment to the portable and mobile lighter equipment, some of them with a precise description of their functions are detailed below.

Engineering equipment with a front bucket/shovel and a small backhoe in the rear combined with a tractor is known as backhoe loader. It is mostly used in small construction sites and in urban engineering such as fixing city roads.

A crawler, which is very powerful and attached with a blade, is called a bulldozer. Even though any heavy engineering vehicle is known as bulldozer, it is actually a tractor with a dozer blade.

Combat engineering vehicles are used for engineering work in the battlefield and for transporting sappers. They are mostly armoured vehicles.

A compact excavator is a wheeled or tracked vehicle with a backfill blade and swing boom. It is also known as mini excavator. The functions and movements of the machines are carried out by transferring hydraulic fluid. This makes a compact hydraulic excavator different from other construction equipment. To compact gravel, dirt, asphalt and concrete in construction work and road laying a road roller which is also known as roller-compactor would be used.

A motorized cultivator with a rotating blade to work in the soil is known as rotary tiller. They are either drawn behind a tractor or self-propelled.

A crane is a derrick or tower equipped with pulleys and cables for lowering and lifting materials. The cranes used in construction industry are mostly temporary structures.

Dragline excavation systems are heavy equipment mostly used in surface mining and civil engineering. The smaller type of dragline excavator is used for port and road construction. The larger type dragline excavator is used in strip-mining operations for coal extraction.

In the building industry, to make foundations, a drilling machine is used. It is also used in oil wells and water wells.

An excavator commonly known as a digger is an engineering vehicle, with a cab mounted on a rotating platform or pivot, and a backhoe on top of an undercarriage with wheels or tracks.
In untamed regions which are being reclaimed for construction, a feller buncher, a machine having an attachment, which fells trees, is used.

A forklift, lift truck or forklift truck is an industrial truck used to pick up and transport heavy material using steel forks under the material to be lifted. The most common usage of a forklift is to move materials stored on pallets.

A loader also known as a bucket loader, front-end loader, scoop loader, shovel, or front loader is a type of tractor using buckets, which can be tilted to lift and move material.
A paver is used to spread asphalt on roadways.

Construction Civil Contractors

The main construction civil project parties are the owner, the engineer and the contractor. The owner requirements are intimated to engineers, who in turn, guide the owner in the mode of construction civil, keeping in view the minimum safety requirements, shortest possible period of completion and minimum cost of construction civil. A good proposal can be achieved by a team of construction engineers, architects, general contractor, special contractor, manufacturer, materials dealers, equipment distributors, government bodies and agencies.

The construction civil engineers primary duty is to exercise quality control during the execution of the project. Depending on the nature of the work, a number of types of contracts are used in the building industry. In projects where execution of work is to be carried out by the use of construction civil equipment, the following three types of contracts are more popular.

1. Lump sum Contract
In this type of contract all the details of the project have to be properly designed and evaluated before the contractor is asked to tender his rate. Hence this is the best type of the contract. In this contract the owner pays a fixed sum of money for the complete project. Thus, if the same type of construction is to be repeated time and again and full details of the work are available then lump sum contract is most suitable.

2. Unit-Price Contract
In this contract, the contractor is asked to execute the various items of work specified in the schedule at the tendered rates. The contractor receives payment at specified intervals during the execution of the work depending upon the value of work executed. This type of contract is most common because it is possible to prepare approximate quantities of various items of work on the basis of complete measurement of similar structures.

3. Cost Plus a Fixed Percentage Contract
In this contract, the contractor is required to execute the work as per plans, specifications and drawings which form the part of the contract bond. The payment is made to the contractor on the basis of on-site costs incurred by the contractor.

Construction - Macrete FlexiArch Bridge System

Video shows the construction of a 15 meter span Macrete FlexiArch road bridge in Shropshire England. The patented FlexiArch bridge system is a "flat pack" precast concrete design which replicates the principles of the masonry arch bridge. The Macrete FlexiArch can be made for spans from 3m to 15m with the possibility of wider spans using multiple arches. The Macrete FlexiArch is the invention of Professor Adrian Long, Queen's University Belfast. Macrete Limited is the commercial development partner.

Ground Stablisation Services for Effective Construction Projects

In order to ensure a successful construction project, it is extremely important to enhance the quality of the ground especially if it is involve a big project. When improved requirements of the building ground have to be met, the strengthening of the ground is of prime importance. The conventional method of clearing away the soil, transporting it away and dumping it is becoming more and more complex and costly. Nonetheless, this cleared away soil needs to be replaced by granulated rock – large stone chippings or gravel. In a bid to ensure an appropriate frost protective layer and creating a substructure, this is enabling enough to bear the associated pressure.

Hard Times For Construction Students

When times are hard, companies look to cut costs, batten down the hatches and hope to survive until the upturn comes. As a result, they're forced into taking a short-term view, cutting back on training and reducing their investment in the future. One of the areas to suffer is recruitment in general, and graduate recruitment in particular. So the first wave of graduates who have actually paid for their education through student fees may find the job they want at the end of it just isn't there.

The CBI's employment trends report shows that almost two fifths of employers have frozen graduate recruitment and a further 10% are reducing the numbers they take on. Only 5% were planning to recruit more graduates. Unsurprisingly, as the number of building projects fell, the construction sector was hardest hit with 54% of the companies imposing a freeze on graduate recruitment.

The Higher Education Careers Service Unit reported 8.9% of graduates out of work, the worst figures since 1993. The figures were even worse for those looking for careers in construction and engineering, with architecture and building, mechanical engineering and civil engineering showing graduate unemployment rates at 10.9%, 11.8% and 11.9% respectively. All surveys showed that graduate recruitment in the public sector had held up well, although this is unlikely to remain the case as the Comprehensive Spending Review starts to take effect.

The Good Old Days...

The current situation is in stark contrast from as recently as two years ago when many firms biggest headache was having more work and opportunities than they could staff. This coupled with a skills shortage of construction professionals meant that young people were actively being incentivised to take construction degree courses. Courses sponsored by Industry and paid holiday placements saw the number and demand for construction courses soar. It was not uncommon for people to be graduating with a job waiting for them at their sponsoring company whilst they sifted through offers from other prospective employers.

Despite the current problems however, having a degree remains an asset, with graduates expected to earn an average of £160,000 more during their career compared to someone with A level qualifications. The downside for the construction sector is that only 25% of jobs in construction require degree level skills, which is below the average. This is due to a number of factors, including the number of manual jobs, the high number of small and medium sized firms (over 250,000) and the fact that 40% of workers are self-employed. Nevertheless, most major companies have graduate recruitment programmes, including Atkins, Balfour Beatty and Carillion even if they have lowered their levels of recruitment.

Advice for Today's Graduates...

The message for graduates seeking work in the construction industry is to research thoroughly and be flexible. Employers are generally looking for candidates who have a relevant degree with a minimum grade of 2:2 or equivalent, so courses in architecture, civil engineering, surveying, construction and building studies are a good start.

As well as academic knowledge, employers welcome a sound technical background and some relevant skills. These include commercial awareness, initiative, teamwork and good IT, communications and organisational skills. Whilst many academic courses will include the development of these skills, employers will value them more if they're gained in conjunction with some sort of work experience.

Having work experience is a big advantage for any graduate seeking employment. This may be gained through an industrial placement year although, if this isn't available, there are other alternatives. Some construction companies do offer gap year opportunities while others, partly because of harder economic conditions, have paid or unpaid internships and placements instead of formal recruitment. If all else fails, students should consider voluntary or temporary positions because any sort of work experience is better than nothing and it at least demonstrates motivation and enthusiasm.

With work in short supply, graduates should be prepared to tailor their job applications and take a position that's offered, even if it isn't the ideal one for their qualifications and ambitions. At least it gets them into a company and gives the opportunity for work experience and future advancement. Even here, management hierarchies may have been reduced and upward promotion opportunities may be few, so patience is needed in the current climate.

In a forthcoming article we will be asking mature student Jason Coffey for his perspective on what its like to be a construction student in the current climate.

Construction of a Gazebo

Are you handy? Think you can build a gazebo from the ground on your terms? There are many plans pavilion for free in libraries and on-line. There are also plans for fees from $ 8 to $ 200. Pavilion plans are more expensive architectural designs that are much more specific and more suited to experienced contractors. But a home improvement buff talent can also use the less expensive options.

A good plan is available for free to build pavilionEazy website. There you will find links to plans for 5 basic pavilions of various sizes and styles to suit many tastes and fully used. There are plans are free.

There are several things that build a pavilion. You will need some basic tools for carpentry, as a level and a screw gun. You also need a sliding compound miter saw or compound miter saw. These machines provide the skills necessary to cut corners when designing the various stages ofPavilion. The sliding version is best for larger pieces of wood.

You can screw the pavilion on a concrete slab or pre-existing wooden floor, or you can use the pavilion with a plea integrated. In the case of the latter, you must pay a concrete pillar for each agency. Contact your local building authorities to find out how deep the concrete piers should be, and you should try to avoid any buried cables, too.

Three types of forests are often used to buildOutdoor structures: pine, cedar and redwood. Pine is softer and easier to manage, but it decomposes faster. Cedar and redwood are harder and more expensive, but aging well.

Alternatively, you can build a metal or vinyl gazebo. But if you do not have heavy machinery for the manufacture of parts, you need to buy a gazebo kit. Assembled in sections for you to come with the hardware provided. Levels A and a screwdriver is usually all that was necessary. It couldneed help from a friend, especially for parts of the roof.

There are many options when it comes to building your own gazebo, and you do not have a star of carpentry getting really good results. And to think that when you're done building your gazebo, you can sit in it and just enjoy the shade.
