Working in the civilian engineering field

Have you ever seen a little boy that doesn't like designing garages, tunnels or building bridges out of wood cubes? Well, there is a field of activity of grown-ups where you can ‘play' with the same things, but at a larger scale – civil engineering. Don't get me wrong, civil engineering is a sector dominated by men employees, but there are also women who like to get involved in mechanical and technical designs. Civil engineers usually design big things, from buildings to airports, dams, sewage systems or bridges. Their work is very thorough, considering the fact that they need to operate with a number of elements (such as materials used for the construction, costs, safety issues, team management) that influence directly the project development. Civil engineering is a vast domain that allows you to experience several types of activities:
* design;
* construction;
* teaching;
* research.

Working as a civil engineer is not easy, but it is rewarding for people who enjoy it. Whether you are on a construction site, behind an office or in a remote rural area, there is something about civil engineering that brings us a special kind of satisfaction. Perhaps is the challenge of solving a complicated problem, or the fact that civil engineers like do things instead of talking. Anyway, civil engineering is a balanced combination of technical tasks and human connections. Therefore, in order to become a civil engineer, you will need a lot more than your engineering diploma. Civil engineering requires you to work with people to a much higher degree than any other types of engineers. You will become a part of a large team, formed by economists, technicians, geologists, other engineers, workers or project managers, which means you must be a team worker and an excellent communicator.
* Civil engineering requires good verbal skills, ability to communicate technical information, resistance to stress & pressure, leadership skills.
If you want to enter the civil engineering field, you need to sign into an engineering school. A college degree in engineering is the minimum requirement for obtaining a position as a civil engineer. However, you can apply for the same position if you have a college degree in mathematics or science, because those are related fields and you will be able to use your knowledge in civil engineering. Make sure you get a license if you want to offer your services directly to the public.
In many cases, what you learn in school doesn't apply to the real world situations, so never believe that once you obtain your civil engineering degree you can go straight on the construction site. Beginner engineers can work with an experienced professional before operating independently. You will learn valuable lessons, gain experience and get a feel of the job without the pressures attached.
Civil engineering pays quite well on the job market, about £60,000 a year on average (according to a 2009 study). It is expected that civil engineering jobs will increase in the following years, along with the economic recovery. As the global population grows, civil engineers will be needed to create and build new systems and structures.
